Benjamin Britten: Peter Grimes, Op. 33
Montagu Slater; based on George Crabbe's poem
"The Borough".

Set in a small English coastal village in 1830, a
fisherman is accused of murdering his apprentices
offshore. The villagers meet him with suspicion and
hostility and suggest he sink his boat. The reported
sight of a boat sinking far out to sea arouses little
interest. - Summary: Peter Grimes

Barry Kay advanced as far as having created a white
model (scale 1:50) and a final model (scale 1:25).
Concurrently, he had begun designing the costumes,
producing pen sketches and gouache-cum-watercolour
drawings. Later in 1984 or early 1985, for reasons
unbeknown to the Archive, the Victoria State Opera
Company abandoned the production, halting the design
process midstream.
