For a choreographer and a designer to work closely together - as did Kenneth MacMillan and Barry Kay - the influence they have on one another toward constructive impulses and ideas sometimes results in pursuing quite a different concept of their respective, initially envisaged work.

Based on MacMillan's intentions for Métaboles - a surreal, bizarre ballet without a specific period setting - Kay created the scenery and costume designs, including the projected variations of those for the male cast as displayed above. While both kept working concurrently on their ideas and the choreography was still in the process of its creation, it so happened that, ultimately, Kay's set design inspired MacMillan to change part of his choreography. In turn, this required Kay to consider contrasting the attire for the male dancers with the nature of the ballet.

Subsequently, they both agreed on a plain but elegant outfit for the single female role, corresponding with the formal attire of black tails for the five gentlemen, as well as ancillary apparel and coiffures fashionable between 1910 and 1920.
