Barry Kay's convincing renditions of the Schoolmaster's and all other characters' facial features resemble caricature-like images that were Janáček's inspiration for composing this opera by drawing on Têsnohlídek's serialised novel of the same theme and which was illustrated with caricatures by Stanislav Lolek.
